Mortensen and McKellar's Karate offers traditional karate, self-defense, and kickboxing/fitness classes for both children and adults. We are located at the Tapply Thompson Community Center in Bristol, promoting a fun and friendly environment in which to train. Our classes focus not only on learning the specifics of martial arts, but also camaraderie and self-improvement.
What is Karate?
Karate, meaning “empty hand”, is a type of martial art that was developed over the course of hundreds of years. It was influenced by other martial arts such as Kung Fu and Chinese Kenpo and there are now dozens of different styles both traditional and modern. As an art form, it is blooming with strong and powerful, yet graceful and aesthetic movements, precise self-defense techniques, and plenty of strengthening and stretching exercises to improve overall health and fitness. But those aren't the only benefits; karate teaches respect, honor, self-control, discipline, and builds self-esteem, confidence, and character.
“Karate both begins and ends with respect”. –Gichin Funakoshi
What Can Karate do for Me?
The benefits of karate are multi-fold: physical, mental and emotional. Learning karate is learning self-defense skills, building strength and endurance, building confidence and self-esteem, and learning how to handle threatening situations and stand up for yourself.
Kickboxing & Fitness
Our kickboxing classes combine cardio, strength training, stretches and kickboxing with elements of self-defense to create an all-inclusive workout that's effective, fun, and full of variety. Students will learn footwork, punching, kicking, and blocking skills, while building strength, endurance, and increasing flexibility.
